HOW TO LEARN ASL THROUGH VIDEO LESSONS ONLINE

Practice…Practice…Practice

Do not worry about how fast or slow you are signing.  Take your time.  You are just learning.  I’m sure you have watched professional interpreters moving their hands very quickly.  Remember something:  They started out very slowly too, one sign at a time.

A suggestion is that you practice in your spare time.  For example, fingerspell the ABC’s and numbers while sitting at a traffic light.  Practice colors as vehicles pass by.  Fingerspell the license plates, road signs, and anything else that you see, without becoming a dangerous driver.  Try signing words to the songs on the radio.  If you’re listening to commentaries, try to sign some of the words being spoken.  You can do the same thing at home while watching television.

If you have a favorite song on CD, look it up in the dictionary to see how to sign many of those words.  Now, practice your new knowledge by listening to the CD and signing.  And remember the importance of facial expressions.

Remember always:  The best way to retain this new language is to use it.  Start now.
